Dance Against Hunger: Food Bank Farm

A bundle of fresh radishes with green leaves is placed on a wooden table. In the background, there are stacks of blue trays and transparent greenhouse structures. The image features HopeLink's logo in the top left corner.

Join DANCE 89.5 for an afternoon of volunteering and giving back to our community!

On Saturday, November 7, we’re heading to Chinook Farms to help Father Jim and his team disassemble six large temporary greenhouses used to grow fresh produce for Hopelink and the Ballard Food Bank.

After flood damage to their permanent greenhouses last December, the team turned to temporary structures to continue growing food for the community. Now, with winter approaching, it’s time to take them down, and we need your help!

There’s a way for everyone to get involved!

Each greenhouse measures approximately 30 feet wide by 96 feet long, and taking them down is a team effort. We’ll have a variety of tasks available for different abilities and comfort levels, including:

  • Lifting and carrying: Helping move large, lightweight structural pieces (must be comfortable lifting 25 – 30 pounds).
  • Disassembly: Unscrewing and removing greenhouse coverings, with no heavy lifting required.
  • Ladder support: Stabilizing ladders and assisting those working at heights.
  • Folding materials: Working together to fold and organize large, tarp-like greenhouse coverings.

Most greenhouse work will take place in a field with uneven terrain, which may be challenging for those with mobility limitations. However, we’ll also have a smaller project available on level or paved ground for volunteers who need to remain seated, prefer not to lift, or require a more accessible workspace.

Whether you’re ready to roll up your sleeves or lend a hand with lighter tasks, your time and support will make a difference!

Dance Against Hunger is made possible with the support and Food Justice advocacy of Puget Sound Energy, Ballard Food Bank, and HopeLink.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • Closed-toe shoes are required for all volunteers. We recommend sturdy, comfortable shoes or boots suitable for working outdoors.
  • Rain or shine, we’ll be there! This event will take place regardless of the weather, so please dress accordingly and bring layers and rain gear if needed.
  • Be prepared for uneven terrain. Most activities will take place in a field, though a limited number of tasks will be available on level or paved ground for those needing a more accessible workspace.
