This week as we are celebrating a huge milestone for DANCE 89.5: wrapping up our very first Student Broadcast Cohort with the new branding!

Since the beginning of July, high school students from across Seattle Public Schools, including Roosevelt, Lincoln, Center School, Nathan Hale, and more, have jumped headfirst into the world of broadcast radio. Over the past few weeks, they’ve traded in their summer downtime for a hands-on crash course in what it really takes to keep a station running.

These talented students didn’t just observe from the sidelines, they rolled up their sleeves and did the work! Throughout the program, they’ve learned about cutting, editing, and mixing sound like pros. The art and science behind building the station’s playlist vibe using software like GSelector and Zetta, plus the basics of crafting compelling scripts and stepping up to the mic with confidence. They also spent time understanding how broadcast signals work, capped off with an incredible field trip to visit our transmitter up on Cougar Mountain!

For the rest of this week, our students are taking over the airwaves to put their new skills to work by hosting our Summer Fund Drive!
